What Is a GST Calculator?
A GST calculator works out the Goods and Services Tax on a price. Enter an amount and a GST rate, and it tells you the tax, the final price, and how the tax is split between the Centre and the State. It works in both directions: adding GST to a base price, or removing GST from a price that already includes it.
GST Calculation Formulas
To add GST (exclusive price):
Final Price = Original Price + GST Amount
To remove GST (inclusive price):
GST Amount = Final Price − Original Price
Example: A product costs ₹10,000 before tax at 18% GST. GST = 10,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹1,800, so the final price is ₹11,800. Going the other way, if the MRP is ₹11,800 including 18% GST, the base price is 11,800 × 100 ÷ 118 = ₹10,000.
Selling Price with Profit Margin and GST
Final Price = Selling Price + GST on Selling Price
Net GST Payable = GST on Sale − GST paid on Purchase (ITC)
Example: You buy an item for ₹1,000 (+18% GST) and add a 20% margin. Selling price before GST is ₹1,200, GST is ₹216, and the customer pays ₹1,416. With input tax credit of ₹180, you pay only ₹36 to the government, which is 18% of your ₹200 profit.
CGST, SGST, UTGST and IGST Explained
- CGST (Central GST): collected by the Central Government on sales within a state. It is half the total GST rate.
- SGST (State GST): collected by the State Government on the same intra-state sale. It is the other half.
- UTGST (Union Territory GST): replaces SGST in Union Territories without their own legislature, such as Chandigarh or Ladakh.
- IGST (Integrated GST): charged on inter-state sales and imports. It equals the full GST rate and is collected by the Centre, then shared with the destination state.
| Sale of ₹10,000 at 18% | CGST | SGST | IGST | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Within the same state | ₹900 (9%) | ₹900 (9%) | - | ₹11,800 |
| To another state | - | - | ₹1,800 (18%) | ₹11,800 |
Current GST Rate Slabs in India
After the GST Council's rate rationalisation (often called GST 2.0), effective 22 September 2025, most goods and services fall into two main slabs, 5% and 18%, with a special 40% rate for luxury and sin goods. A few special rates continue.
| Rate | Typical items |
|---|---|
| 0% (Nil) | Fresh fruit and vegetables, milk, curd, eggs, unbranded flour, books, and individual life and health insurance |
| 0.25% | Rough and cut diamonds, precious stones |
| 3% | Gold, silver and jewellery |
| 5% | Packaged food staples, toiletries such as soap and toothpaste, medicines, economy hotel stays, many daily-use items |
| 18% | Most services, electronics, small cars, ACs, TVs, cement, restaurants inside premium hotels |
| 40% | Luxury cars, aerated and sugary drinks, pan masala, and other luxury or sin goods |
| 12% / 28% | Legacy slabs, now largely merged into 5% and 18% (some items, such as certain tobacco products, may still apply them during the transition) |
Rates depend on the exact HSN/SAC code. Always confirm the current rate for your item on the official CBIC rate notifications before filing returns.
How to Read a GSTIN
A GSTIN is a 15-character number. The first 2 digits are the state code (27 = Maharashtra, 07 = Delhi, 29 = Karnataka), the next 10 are the business PAN, the 13th is the entity number, the 14th is usually "Z", and the 15th is a check character. The invoice tab checks the format and the check character, and uses the state codes to suggest CGST + SGST or IGST automatically.
GST Inclusive vs. GST Exclusive
- GST exclusive: the price does not include tax yet. Common in B2B quotes and wholesale price lists ("₹10,000 + GST").
- GST inclusive: the price already contains the tax. Every MRP printed on a retail product in India is GST-inclusive.
Who Should Use This Calculator

- Freelancers and consultants adding 18% GST on professional services.
