Why Do Passport Photos Get Rejected?

It's rarely the photo quality itself. • Thailand and Pakistan allow a light blue background as an alternative to white.

How Accurate Is the Face Detection, and When Should You Just Retake the Photo?

For a clear, front-facing photo with even lighting, the auto-alignment gets the head size and centering right without much fiddling. It's looking for your eyes and the outline of your face, so anything that hides or distorts them, like sunglasses, a hat, a strong shadow across one side of your face, or a head tilted at an angle, makes its job harder.

If the alignment looks off, the zoom slider and drag controls let you nudge it manually, and the Auto-align button will re-run detection if you upload a better photo. But if you're starting from a dim, blurry, or low-resolution webcam shot, no amount of fine-tuning fixes that. The best source photo is still a plain, well-lit, front-facing picture taken at arm's length or by someone else, on a phone or camera from the last year or so.
