Why FileReadyNow
Convert PNG to HEIC Free, With Full Quality Control and No Upload
Shrink big PNG files into compact HEIC images that Apple devices open natively, without your pictures ever leaving your computer.
Much Smaller Files
HEIC uses the HEVC codec, so a photo saved as HEIC is often a fraction of the size of the same picture as a PNG.
Adjustable Quality
Use the quality slider to trade file size against detail. Pick a higher setting for photos you plan to keep, a lower one for quick sharing.
Batch Conversion
Add up to 10 PNG files at once, convert them in one pass, and download the results together as a single ZIP.
Original Dimensions Kept
Your image keeps its original resolution. The only exception is an odd pixel row or column, which is trimmed so the HEVC encoder can accept the size.
No Upload to Server
Encoding happens in your browser using your device's own HEVC encoder. Your images are never sent to or stored on any server.
No Account Required
Drop in your PNG files and download the HEIC results. No signup, no watermark, and no usage limits.
PNG is a great format for screenshots, graphics and anything that needs perfect pixels, but it is a heavy one for photographs. A single detailed picture can run to many megabytes because PNG stores every pixel without discarding any information. HEIC, the High Efficiency Image Container that Apple made the default on iPhones and iPads, stores the same picture using modern HEVC compression and usually comes out far smaller.
This converter turns PNG files into HEIC directly in your browser. You choose the quality, drop in up to ten files, and download standard HEIC images that open in Photos on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Nothing is uploaded, so it is safe to use with private photos and client work.
Why Convert PNG to HEIC
The main reason is storage. A photo exported from an editing tool as PNG is often several times larger than it needs to be for viewing. Saving it as HEIC keeps it visually close to the original at a much smaller size, which matters when you are filling up an iPhone, syncing a large library to iCloud, or sending a batch of pictures over a slow connection.
The second reason is fit. If you work on a Mac or an iPhone, HEIC is the format your Photos library already uses, so images you convert sit alongside your camera photos without any special handling. Design apps and screenshots often produce PNG, and converting them to HEIC lets you keep them in the same compact format as everything else.
PNG vs HEIC: Which Should You Use
PNG is lossless. Every pixel is preserved exactly, and the format supports transparency. That makes it the right choice for logos, icons, interface screenshots, diagrams and any image you will keep editing. Its weakness is size, especially for photographs and other images with lots of gradients and fine detail.
HEIC is a lossy format built for photographs. It discards detail the eye is unlikely to notice in exchange for a much smaller file. The quality slider on this page controls how aggressively that happens. Because HEIC from this tool does not carry transparency, transparent areas in your PNG are filled with white. If you need to keep transparency, keep the file as PNG.
As a rule of thumb: keep PNG for graphics, transparency and editing masters, and use HEIC for photographs you want to store or share compactly on Apple devices.
Where HEIC Files Open
HEIC opens natively on iPhone, iPad and Mac (iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra or later), including in Photos, Files, Quick Look and Preview. Recent versions of Android, and Windows 10 and 11 with the HEIF and HEVC extensions installed, can open it too. Support elsewhere is patchy: many websites, older software and print services still expect JPG or PNG, so keep your original PNG if you may need to upload the picture to a service that does not accept HEIC.
How the Conversion Works Without Uploading Your Files
Most online converters send your file to a server, convert it there, and send it back. This tool works differently. Your browser decodes the PNG, then uses the HEVC video encoder built into your device to compress it as a single frame. The result is wrapped in a standard HEIF container and offered as a download. All of that happens locally, so your images stay on your device from start to finish.
Because the encoder is provided by your browser and device, PNG to HEIC works in current versions of Chrome, Edge and Safari on hardware that supports HEVC encoding. Firefox does not currently offer HEVC encoding, and some older or low-power devices do not either. If your browser cannot encode HEIC, this page tells you so before you start.
Metadata such as camera details or location does not carry over from the PNG. The HEIC file is built from the image pixels alone, which is a small privacy benefit when you share pictures.
Tips for the Best Results
- Start from the highest-quality PNG you have. Converting a small or already compressed image will not add detail.
- Use a quality of 60 to 80 for photographs you want to keep, and 30 to 50 when file size matters most.
- Screenshots with sharp text and flat colour compress differently from photos. If the result looks soft, raise the quality.
- Very large images can be rejected by a device's HEVC encoder. If that happens, resize the PNG and try again.
- Keep your original PNG files. HEIC is lossy, and you cannot recover the exact original pixels from it.
