PNG to SVG

PNG and SVG solve different problems. A PNG is a fixed grid of pixels, so the moment you scale it past its original size it starts to look soft or blocky. An SVG describes shapes with math instead of pixels, so it stays crisp no matter how big or small it gets. That makes SVG the right format for logos, icons, and any graphic that needs to show up at more than one size.

This tool traces the actual shapes in your PNG using a tracing engine that runs fully in your browser. Nothing is uploaded anywhere, and there's no limit on how many files you convert.

How vector tracing works

The tool looks at your PNG and groups similar colors into a small palette, then draws a shape for each area of color using smooth paths instead of pixels. The number of colors slider controls how many separate shapes get created. Fewer colors give you a cleaner, simpler SVG that's great for logos and icons. More colors capture finer detail but produce a larger file. The detail level controls how closely the traced paths follow the original edges, and the mode lets you trace in full color, grayscale, or a plain black and white silhouette.

When to use embed mode instead

Tracing is built for flat graphics with clear edges, like logos, icons, line drawings, and text. Photos and anything with gradients, shadows, or fine texture don't trace cleanly because there's no flat color to outline. Turn on embed mode for those images instead. It skips tracing completely and wraps your original PNG inside an SVG container, so you still get a file with an .svg extension and no loss in image quality.

When PNG to SVG is the right choice

• Logos and brand marks: trace your logo once and use the SVG everywhere from a favicon to a banner without ever worrying about blur.
• Icons and UI elements: vector icons stay sharp on any screen resolution and usually end up smaller than their PNG equivalents.
• Line art and illustrations: simple drawings and sketches trace cleanly into editable shapes you can recolor or adjust later.
• Print and large format work: SVG scales to billboard size with no loss of sharpness, which a PNG can't do past its native resolution.
• Web performance: a traced SVG of a simple graphic is often a fraction of the size of the same image saved as PNG.

What to expect from the SVG output

Vector tracing works best on graphics with flat colors and clear edges. Logos, icons, and line art usually trace into a clean, accurate SVG. Photos and complex images will look more like a posterized painting than a perfect copy, since tracing has to approximate continuous tone with a limited set of shapes. If a traced result doesn't look right, switch to embed mode and convert again. The file will still be a valid SVG, just with the original PNG embedded instead of redrawn as paths.
