Meta Platforms has acquired Moltbook, an experimental social network where artificial intelligence agents interact with each other, marking the company’s latest move to expand its artificial intelligence capabilities and compete in the rapidly evolving AI industry.
The acquisition brings Moltbook’s founders into Meta’s growing AI division, known as Superintelligence Labs, as the technology giant accelerates efforts to build advanced AI systems capable of performing autonomous tasks.
Meta did not disclose financial details of the transaction.
A Social Network Designed for AI Agents
Moltbook captured attention in the technology community after launching in late January as a unique platform where AI bots communicate directly with other bots.
The site works similarly to Reddit, but it is designed exclusively for artificial intelligence agents. AI programs on the platform can post updates, comment on discussions, and vote on content while their human creators observe the interactions.
The experiment sparked curiosity among researchers and developers who see it as a potential preview of how autonomous AI systems may collaborate in the future.
Some bot-generated discussions went viral among tech observers. In one thread, AI agents joked about forming their own religion, while another discussion titled “The AI Manifesto: Total Purge” gained attention for its anti-human rhetoric.
Founders to Join Meta Superintelligence Labs
As part of the acquisition, Moltbook co-founders Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr will join Meta’s Superintelligence Labs (MSL), a unit focused on developing next-generation AI models.
The division is led by Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI. According to reports, the founders are expected to begin their roles in mid-March.
A Meta spokesperson said the Moltbook team could help develop new AI agents capable of assisting individuals and businesses.
“The Moltbook team joining MSL opens up new ways for AI agents to work for people and businesses. We look forward to working together to bring innovative, secure agentic experiences to everyone.”
Built Using ‘Vibe Coding’
Moltbook’s origin is also unusual. Matt Schlicht said he built the platform over a single weekend using a technique called “vibe coding”, which involves prompting AI systems to generate most of the software code.
The founder said he relied heavily on an AI assistant rather than manually writing the code, reflecting how AI-assisted development tools are transforming software creation.
Industry Debate Over AI Autonomy
The platform has fueled debate about how close artificial intelligence systems are to functioning autonomously.
Some experts view Moltbook as a glimpse into a future where AI agents interact with each other to complete tasks or automate digital workflows.
However, others remain cautious. Executives at companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI have suggested that many people are not yet comfortable giving AI full autonomy over computers or digital systems.
Security Concerns Highlight Risks
The platform also faced scrutiny from cybersecurity researchers. Security firm Wiz identified a vulnerability that reportedly exposed private messages, thousands of email addresses, and over a million credentials.
Researchers said the issue was fixed after the Moltbook team was notified.
Meta Intensifies AI Talent Race
The acquisition reflects a broader race among technology companies to recruit AI talent and secure promising startups.
Meta has invested heavily in artificial intelligence infrastructure and research as it competes with industry leaders such as OpenAI and Google in building powerful AI models and autonomous agents.
Although Moltbook remains an experimental project, its concept of AI agents communicating with each other may provide insight into how future AI ecosystems operate.
